Delta Challenges

Delta Challenges

Part of the Environment & Sustainability Cluster.

Zeeland beach with blue skies and a few clouds during the day in the summer

Delta Challenges encourages you to think about creating sustainable solutions for life in vulnerable coastal regions. You will explore how communities can build with nature, manage rising water levels, and transition to a circular economy. Through case studies, fieldwork, and hands-on projects in Zeeland, you’ll learn how engineering, ecology, and policy come together to address climate and resource challenges. This field prepares you to think critically and act responsibly in shaping resilient futures for delta regions worldwide.

Opening up Delta Challenges courses

If you want to learn a bit more about the area we are in, that’s easy, as all 100 and 200 level courses in Delta Challenges are open to all students. If you wish to take the 300-level course, you will need to complete both Sustainability Essentials I and Sustainability Essentials II.

Gateway

Sustainability Essentials I

Sustainability Essentials I

Provides key concepts in physics, chemistry, materials science, mathematics and modelling necessary for sustainability. Uses a case study to connect concepts to real‑world sustainability challenges and prepares students for 200‑level sustainability courses.
Gateway

Sustainability Essentials II

Sustainability Essentials II

Builds on Sustainability Essentials I. Applies tools and knowledge to a real‑world sustainability case study and allows students to delve deeper into aspects connected to their field of interest.
100-level

Building with Nature

Building with Nature

Building with Nature is a sustainable engineering approach that works with natural processes for solutions like flood protection, land reclamation, and port development. The approach is gaining momentum since it offers cost-effective and environmentally promising alternatives to traditional constructions that are no longer viable in the light of climate change and sea level rise. The course covers the history and principles of ecosystem-based design, explores real-world case studies, and includes guest lectures and field excursions to see Building with Nature in practice.
200-level

Living with Water

Living with Water

This course explores sustainable water management in delta regions, focusing on how communities adapt to rising seas, floods, and land subsidence. Through active participation in current projects in Zeeland, students learn about integrated water strategies, nature-based solutions, and resilient infrastructure. Emphasis is placed on living with, rather than fighting against, water through innovative planning, design, and policy approaches.

R3: Recycling, Recovery and Remediation

R3: Recycling, Recovery and Remediation

Resource security is of high importance for societies as well as proper stewardship to use resource in a way that preserved resources for future generations. In this course, we will discover what current strategies and technologies are available towards a circular economy in which resource cycles are optimized and closed. The course will first bring you up to speed with basic lab skills and inorganic chemistry. This course is related to themes at the Delta Climate Center and may be a stepping stone towards an internship.
