Courses

Courses

At UCR, not all courses are the same. The curriculum includes different types of courses, each designed with a specific purpose in mind. As you build your program, you will come across courses at different levels, including gateway courses, core courses, responsive courses, and research-intensive courses. Each plays a unique role in shaping your academic journey.

-level

Introductory courses: Broad courses that introduce a subject and build essential academic skills

-level

Intermediate courses: Focused courses that build depth and require critical thinking.

-level

Advanced courses: Intensive courses with complex content and independent work.

Gateway Courses

Gateway Courses

Gateway courses are key introductory courses that help you build the academic skills and foundational knowledge needed to succeed in more advanced courses within a field of study. They are designed to support your transition into university-level thinking, writing, and analysis, and often connect across multiple fields, opening up a range of future course choices.

Research-Intensive Courses

Research-Intensive Courses

Research-intensive courses offer a deep dive into academic inquiry. In these advanced-level classes, you’ll engage with scholarly literature, learn research methods, and often carry out your own research project. These courses help you develop the independent thinking and analytical skills expected at graduate-level study—and beyond.

Core Courses

Core Courses

Core courses provide the essential knowledge and skills within a specific field of study. They form the backbone of your studies, covering key theories, methods, and content that prepare you for future academic work, including Master’s programs. These courses ensure that your education is grounded in the fundamentals of your chosen field(s).

Responsive Courses

Responsive Courses

Responsive courses are designed to stay fresh, relevant, and connected to the world around you. These courses respond to emerging issues, student interests, and societal challenges, so content may change more frequently than in other courses. They are a space to explore real-life questions and engage with current debates in your field of study.
